Translator’s General Notes

Please read this and my translation disclaimer before reading my translations

On Character Names

I don’t have the slightest idea on how to properly transliterate names. In Bestial Blade, especially, not all characters seem to have a surname, making it even more confusing. And so I just do it in a very straightforward way. Some examples:

  • 长安 becomes Chang An. I later learned that it should be Chang’an, but editing everything is too much of a hassle
  • 索莱木 becomes Suo Laimu. I don’t know if “Suo” is a surname or if “Suolaimu” is his whole given name. In the case of it being the latter, I could’ve easily translated 索莱木 as Solem. However, since I translate as I go, I cannot tell if Suo is a surname or not.
  • 卡佐 becomes Ka Zuo. Also another case of me not knowing if “Ka” is a surname.

Generally, I would treat the first character in the name as a surname and the second (and third, if any) as the given name. However, if the first character is just 阿 (ā), then I would keep everything as a given name.

Edit: All the characters don’t have a surname… ha.. ha… ha…

On Tribe Names

  • Azure Dragon (青龙) – Before, I transliterated this as “Qinglong” tribe, but I realized later that doing so strips off the majesty of the “Azure Dragon.”

The Azure Dragon is said to be a legendary creature, who is part of the Four Symbols, also known as the Four Spirits of heaven. It represent spring and the east.
  • Jushan (巨山) – literally means Big Mountain or Great Mountain tribe. It’s the only tribe, so far, that I’m writing in pinyin instead of using English
  • Black Eagle (黑鹰) – In some of my earlier translations, I translated this as Black Hawk, since 鹰 could mean either hawk, eagle, or falcon; generally, any predatory bird. Moreover, I had also wanted to use a different animal, since there’s already a Bald Eagle tribe.

However, in later chapters, Priest once specifically used the characters 飞鹰 to refer to the Black Eagle tribe. And 飞鹰 can only mean eagle, at least, according to the online dictionary I use.

The Song Sung by the Elder in Chapter 1

The first translator didn’t translate this, so I translated it instead, for the song seems very important in the story. Read the translation.
